چکیده
In this paper we integrate the macroscopic traffic flow model METANET with the microscopic dynamic emission and fuel consumption model VT-Micro. We use the integrated models in the model predictive control (MPC) framework to reduce exhaust emissions, fuel consumption, and travel time using dynamic speed limit control. With simulation experiments we demonstrate the countereffects and conflicting nature of the different traffic control objectives. Our simulation results indicate that a modelbased traffic control approach, particularly MPC, can be used to obtain a balanced trade-off between the conflicting traffic control objectives.

travel time ∗
In this paper we use a model-based traffic control approach to determine dynamic speed limits with the aim of reducing fuel consumption and emissions, while still guaranteeing small travel times. The approach we propose is based on model predictive control (MPC). MPC is a modelbased control design method that combines prediction and on-line optimization of a performance criterion over a given t...
متن کاملA neuro-fuzzy approach to vehicular traffic flow prediction for a metropolis in a developing country
Short-term prediction of traffic flow is central to alleviating congestion and controlling the negative impacts of environmental pollution resulting from vehicle emissions on both inter- and intra-urban highways. The strong need to monitor and control congestion time and costs for metropolis in developing countries has therefore motivated the current study. This paper establishes the applicatio...
متن کاملMitigating Emissions and Energy Consumption for Urban Transportation Networks : Simulation - Based Signal Control Strategies ARcHWS
Microscopic urban traffic simulators embed the most detailed traveler behavior and network supply models. They represent individual vehicles and can therefore account for vehicle-specific technologies. These simulators can be coupled with instantaneous energy consumption and emissions models to yield detailed network-wide estimates of energy consumption and pollutant emissions. Nonetheless, the...
متن کاملEnvironmental Traffic Assignment: Developing Emission-based Models
Vehicle tailpipe emissions are major sources of air pollution and greenhouse gases. In addition to the ongoing efforts on emissions reduction, we believe there is a need to explore an innovating approach in which drivers routing decisions are influenced to minimize emissions and fuel consumption. In order to evaluate such transportation systems, we develop environmental traffic assignment model...
